How to Throw a Burns Night Supper

This celebration of the life of world-renowned poet Robert Burns is a highlight on all Scottish calenders. It is also a great way to spend an evening with friends and family, over hearty food and whisky! It's certainly an evening to look forward to and keep you warm in the frosty month of January.

This year, Burns night falls on Monday 25th January. So if you are planning to join in the festivities, whether you are Scottish or not, follow these top tips to throw a successful Burns Night Supper.

Five Tips When Planning a Burns Night Party:

1. Firstly, be sure to invite your guests in plenty of time. Many people will be hosting a Burns Supper, so it's important you make sure your guests have plenty of notice and chose to come to your home for the main night.

2. Food. Haggis and Neeps and Tatties are essentials. If you've never cooked these Scottish favourites then take a quick Google to hunt down a recipe. Many Scots will have their own traditonal family twists to cooking the haggis, or the neeps and tatties, so ask your guests if they have any suggestions to help you.

3. Whisky is the drink to toast the hosts, and to toast Robert Burns himself. So be sure to supply a good bottle for your guests. Or even ask your guests to bring along their perferred Scotch, that way everyone can drink their whisky of choice and also start a healthy discussion over the dinnertable!

4. Be sure to decorate. Jump into the spirit of the evening with lots of tartan touches and traditional floral displays. Hang the Royal Standard of Scotland flag, or use Scottish bunting to make sure your evening is nothing short of patriotic! Use a tartan table runner, or tartan napkins for the a touch of Scottish heritage too.

5. No Burns supper is complete without the traditional songs and poems. Head to RabbieBurns.com to get a full timetable for a a traditional Burns Night evening and have all your poems, speeches and songs prepared in advance.
